Wire Rope Inspection, Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT) & Lubrication

Wire ropes used on winches and cranes are continually exposed to damage and fatigue. While visual inspections can identify surface damage, internal deterioration often develops long before visible signs appear.

Routine inspections help identify hidden defects before they become critical, reducing the risk of unexpected failure, improving operational safety and supporting planned maintenance. Inspections are recommended as part of regular maintenance programmes or before major lifting operations.

Regular inspections also support compliance with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and other applicable industry standards.

Our inspection services support offshore cranes, winches, active heave compensation (AHC) systems, mooring equipment and other critical lifting applications where wire rope integrity is essential.

Our certified inspectors deliver accurate, data-driven assessments that support safe lifting operations, maximise rope service life and help operators meet inspection and maintenance requirements.

Why choose Ashtead Technology for rope inspection?

  • Detailed assessments by certified inspectors
  • Advanced inspection techniques
  • Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT)
  • Full reporting, quantitative data and recommendations
  • Wire rope lubrication
  • Inspection of wire ropes up to 165mm
  • Rope handling and spooling winches

Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT) is an advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) method used during wire rope inspections to assess the internal condition of a rope without causing damage.

Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT) forms part of our inspection service and is used alongside visual inspection to provide a complete assessment of wire rope condition.

MRT can detect:

  • Internal broken wires
  • External broken wires
  • Corrosion
  • Loss of metallic cross-sectional area
  • Localised damage throughout the rope

The inspection data provides a detailed record of wire rope condition, allowing operators to monitor deterioration throughout the rope’s service life and make informed maintenance and replacement decisions.
